1. WELCOME FR. HUY QUANG DINH, C.S.Sp. OUR NEW PRO-TEM CHAPLAIN
Welcome aboard our newest member of the staff of the Office of Young Adult and Campus Ministry: Fr. Huy Quang Dinh, C.S.Sp., our new pro-tem Chaplain of the UH/TSU Catholic Campus Ministry. Fr. Huy is a member of the Spiritan Community.  His recent assignment took place as the Formation Director of the Spiritan Community in Houston, TX and as the Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hemet, CA.  He was Ordained in 2000 by Bishop Gerald Barnes of San Bernardino, CA.  Prior to entering the seminary he was with the Spiritans for seven years and worked as a computer programming analyst in Anchorage, AK.  In addition, he also worked for the Southern California Gas Company in Los Angeles, CA.  He graduated from California State University of Fullerton with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. He was born in Vietnam and stayed in a refugee camp in Thailand for three years prior to migrating to the United States.  His family consists of his parents, and eight brothers and sisters who all currently live in the states.  Aside from his religious life, he enjoys listening to classical music and playing computer games.  We are grateful for his eagerness to take up this new ministry.
 
2. ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES  
Classes are forming for students who are practicing their Catholic faith but who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please e-mail Giovan Cuchapin at fcuchapin [at] uh [dot] edu to enroll or if you have any questions.  The Confirmation classes will meet for 7 weeks.  Classes will be every Thursdays at the Catholic Newman Center from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM beginning on March 4th. The participants for this Adult Confirmation classes will be confirmed by the Bishop on May 23rd.

3. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS

Daylight Saving Time begins on Saturday, March 13th at 2:00 AM. Please set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed.

 
4. COUGAR CATHOLIC ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK
Do you want to have a meaningful and fruitful Spring Break? You want to serve your fellow Christians?  Please join the students and staff of the UH Catholic Newman Center in their Alternative Spring Break starting on Sunday, March 14th through Wednesday, March 17th.  For information please contact Giovan Cuchapin at (713) 748 – 2529 or fcuchapin [at] uh [dot] edu  
 
5. UH SPRING BREAK
The UH Spring Break will begin on Monday, March 15th through Friday, March 19th.  No Daily Masses will take place during these days.  There will not be a 6:00 PM evening Mass on Sunday, March 14th.  Enjoy your Spring Break...Be safe and have fun!
 
6. RETREAT OPPORTUNITY BAYOU AWAKENING # 14 “DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE IN CHRIST”
MARCH 19th – 21st @ CAMP KAPPE
Bayou Awakening is a retreat for college age young adults (18 - 25), led by young adults, that focuses on deepening your relationship with Christ. There are several talks, including: "What is a Christian?" 7. LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE
The UH Catholic Newman Center will host a Lenten Penance Service on Thursday, March 25th at 7:00 PM. Please invite your family and friends to take advantage of this wonderful Sacrament. Priests from around the Archdiocese will be available for confessions. For more information please call Giovan Cuchapin at (713) 748 - 2529.
 
8. RESPECT PARKING SIGNS @ CATHOLIC CENTER PARKING LOT
We are a vibrant and growing community here at the UH Catholic Newman Center.  Please respect the posted parking signs at the lot.  Some spots are designated specifically for Newman Center Staff and for Handicap people.  PLEASE RESPECT the DESIGNATED PARKING SPOTS.  Especially, NO PARKING on the sidewalk.  Use your UH parking permit that you paid for when you registered on campus.  The undesignated parking spots are for students who will be staying at the UH Catholic Newman Center on a first come first serve basis.

The Adventure 2010 will be on Friday, May 28th thru Monday, May 31st at the Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House 600 N. The UH Catholic Community Congratulates the R.C.I.A. Class. Sonu Singh will be presented as a Catechumen.  She will receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Darrell Anderson will be received into Full Communion of the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil and Gavin Akunna, Alfred Martinez and Adriana Ceballoswill receive the sacrament of Confirmation. All of these Catechumens and Candidates will go to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston on Sunday, February 21st at 3:00 PM to participate in the Rite of Election. Please keep them in your prayers during this Lenten Season.
 
On Monday, February 22nd Fr. Dan will be moving to Pittsburgh, PA to become Pastor of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in the Hazelwood neighborhood and Formation Director for the pre-novitiate program.  The Spiritan formation program here in Houston will be moved to Pittsburgh in the Fall and the seminarians will attend Duquesne University founded by the Spiritans in 1878.  We will dearly miss Fr. Dan at the UH Catholic Newman Center.  The Catholic Community is saddened to see him go, but we are happy that he was assigned to his home town.  There he will get to spend time with his family, especially his Dad, Sister, Niece and Nephew.  God keep him safe on his road trip to Pittsburgh.  Go Steelers and Pirates… Sincerely, the UH Catholic Newman Center. Vaya con Dios!

2.  ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION 
This year the collection taken at all Ash Wednesday Masses will be used to support Archdiocesan Social Ministries.  Beginning the Season of Lent by recalling the needs of our neighbors and offering alms for their benefit will help ensure that we enter this penitential season with the proper disposition.  With shrinking governmental and foundation funding, the only way these social service organizations will be able to continue the level of support that is needed, is if our own archdiocesan family is generous in it contribution.  Please be assured of my deepest gratitude for your strong support of this important collection.  With prayerful best wishes for a truly spiritual Lenten season, I am Fraternally in Christ, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston – Houston.
 
3.  ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES
Ash Wednesday this year is on February 17th.  This day marks the beginning of the Lenten season.  The imposition of ashes is an ancient penitential practice symbolizing our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness.  Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence in the Catholic Church.  The following is the schedule of Masses with distribution of ashes at the A D Bruce Religion Center in the Main Chapel: 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM.  Use UH entrance # 13 to get to the A D Bruce Religion Center.  For more information please call (713) 748 – 2529.

1. ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES  
Classes are forming for students who are practicing their Catholic faith but who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please e-mail Giovan Cuchapin at fcuchapin [at] uh [dot] edu to enroll or if you have any questions.  The Confirmation classes will meet for 7 weeks.  Class times and dates will be determined later. The participants for this Adult Confirmation classes will be confirmed by the Bishop on May 23, 2010.
 
2. “FOLLOW ME…” 2010 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND
Our 2010 Diocesan Services Fund begins this weekend in every parish throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston – Houston. Our theme this year is “Follow Me… “  We are called to be Christ to those sick or in need, to teach, to reach out. The Archdiocese of Galveston – Houston needs your compassion and generosity. Your gift to DSF enables us to reach out to people in your parish and in the Archdiocese through more than 6o important programs. This week, all registered parishioners will receive a letter from His Eminence, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston - Houston, along with a personalized pledge card, inviting you to head Christ’s call and follow him by your participation in this year’s Diocesan Services Fund. Please complete the enclosed pledge card and return it in the mail in the special envelope provided or bring it to Mass next weekend. If you prefer, you may go online at www.archgh.org/dsf to make your donation. Your generous gift will allow our Catholic community to continue many vital programs and services.
 
3. ASIAN NEW YEAR AT THE UH CATHOLIC NEWMAN CENTER
This year, the student body of the UH Catholic Newman Center decided to celebrate the Asian New Year on Thursday, February 11th. Our celebration will begin at 6:00 PM with a potluck dinner and dance. Please come and join this annual celebration at the UH Catholic Newman Center. Do not forget to bring a dish to share for the potluck lunch.
  
4. ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES
Ash Wednesday this year is on February 17th. This day marks the beginning of the Lenten season. The imposition of ashes is an ancient penitential practice symbolizing our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence in the Catholic Church. The following is the schedule of Masses with distribution of ashes at the
A D Bruce Religion Center in the Main Chapel: 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Use UH entrance # 13 to get to the A D Bruce Religion Center. For more information please call (713) 748 – 2529.
 
5. PENITENTIAL PRACTICES
Ash Wednesday and Good Fridayare days of fast and abstinence. 
Fridays of Lentare days ofabstinence.
Fasting binds all persons who have completed their 18th birthday through those who have completed their 59th year, unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence binds all persons who have completed their 14th birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence during Lent, the consumption of meat of mammals or fowl is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence throughout the year, but failure to do so is not regarded as sinful.
Lent is a penitential season and as such religious practice such as Daily Mass, Reception of the Sacrament of Penance, the Devotion of the Stations of the Cross, Works of Charity and Justice, and Acts of Self-Denial are highly encouraged.
 
6. WOMEN’S VOCATIONS DISCERNMENT GATHERING

7. MYRIAM DINNER WITH WOMEN COMMUNITIES AND DANIEL CARDINAL DINARDO
